Napoli Porta Est: Reimagining Naples’ Gateway

'The Terrarium,' a scaled ecosystem providing a connection to nature in an increasingly urbanised world.

Creating a green urban oasis and carving a building from the landscape, designing a biophilic glass catchment, creating an urban terrarium.

Genton’s proposal to reimagine the Garibaldi-Porta Est Complex, envisions a new life for Naples’ old railway areas that echos its past by blending architecture, nature and community. This included designing the new headquarters for Regione Campania. Our concept for Napoli Porta Est offered a 21st-century vision that blends architecture, nature, and community.

This project was all about creating connections—linking people, culture, and nature on a grand scale, while embracing Naples’ rich historical layers. In collaboration with the landscape design firm McGregor Coxall, we envisioned a green oasis, with over 90% of the site dedicated to landscaping. Our design aimed to establish a thriving metropolis, where entrepreneurship, community, and environment coexist within a vibrant cultural hub.

The new Campania HQ was conceptualised as an urban ‘terrarium’—a dynamic blend of landscape and architecture. Faceted high-performance glass facades reflect the site’s geometry, acting as a biophilic filter that regulates internal climates through expansive louvred green walls. The building itself is carved from the landscape, wrapping upon itself to create a sheltered, porous courtyard—a symbolic gesture, inviting the public into the heart of government rather than keeping them on the periphery.

From lush green roofs to biophilic perimeters, every aspect of the project reconnects the people of Naples with the natural world, revitalising spaces that had been overshadowed by urbanisation.
